For those of you who don’t know how the “chip” system works in races, basically each runner has a unique computer controlled chip on a tag attached to one of their shoes.  Every time a runner completes a lap this chip sends a signal to a controller which records data (not only the total number of laps but also the time taken per lap etc.). This data is then used to record the official distances / positions etc of the runners at any point in the race.
