WILLIAM ENDS SEASON IN MONACO

Sanday ultra distance runner William Sichel (52) ends his season by competing in the "No Finish Line" 24 hour event in the Principality of Monaco on Saturday 26th /Sunday 2 th November.

This will be William's first visit to Monaco for this unusual, week long, event which is like the Monaco equivalent of Britain 's 'Children in Need' appeal. A closed circuit of 1km has been set up around the harbour in Monaco and for 7 days every kilometre that entrants walk or run a large bank pays one euro into a children's charity. The individual 24 hour race is then held on the final day.

The race starts at 8am on Saturday morning with temperatures expected to be in the low teens centigrade during the day but very low at night.

William's last performance was at the beginning of October when he became the first Scot ever to complete the World's longest point to point race – the "Spartathlon"– in Greece. William covered the 153 mountainous miles in 33 hours 14 minutes to achieve 37th place overall and 3 rd in his age group.

"It took me longer to recover than expected after the Greek race probably due to the rugged nature of the course. But I seem to be back in form now and am looking forward to a solid performance in Monaco."

The other highlight for William over the past 12 months was his outright win in the "Across the Years" 24 hour race in Phoenix, Arizona with a 5 year best distance of 136.4 miles last January.

William currently lies 5 th on the "All time" list of British road performances with his run of 153.3 miles in 2000 and is currently this year's Great Britain overall No2 with his Phoenix performance of 136.4 miles.

William is a member of the Orkney Athletic Club and was voted Orkney's ‘Veteran Sportsman of the Year' for the second successive year in November. He has represented Great Britain 11 times at ultra distance running since 1996.

William set new Guinness World Records for both 100 miles and 24hrs on the treadmill in December 2002. With his wife, Elizabeth, he runs the Orkney Angora mail order knitwear and yarn business in Sanday, Orkney.

William is grateful to sponsors: The Ayre Hotel, The Orcadian , Crantit Dairy (Orkney Ice Cream), dion_networks and Loganair .

End.
