Sichel achieves 3rd place in Greek 24 Hour race

Orkney’s ultra distance runner William Sichel took third place overall from 33 starters in the Athens International Ultramarathon Festival 24 Hour event on Thursday/Friday March 27th/28th.

Competing in good conditions and 22°C on day one, William battled torrential rain and a badly flooded course on day two to record 118 miles to make his second successive podium finish in international events.

Revealing that this was the first 24 hour event he had ever done without any symptoms of gastro-intestinal disturbance, William in fact went a bit too fast in the opening 8 hour period and paid for it in the later stages.

“I really had to dig in and fight for a podium finish, which is what I managed.  A great experience for my 48 hour event in May and reminds me that I mustn’t ever start too fast otherwise I pay the price.”

William next heads for Lanzarote for some warm weather training in late April before going to France for the “World Championships” of 48 Hour running on May 16th-18th.

William is grateful to sponsors: Myprotein, Loganair & The Orcadian
