Project 60@60
Project 60@60
“My aim is to have set 60 ultra distance records before my 60th birthday on October 1st 2013.”
My Criteria
I have originated this project myself and have therefore produced my own criteria. I wanted the distances/durations chosen to be the most popular and challenging ones.
I chose all the distances/durations recognised by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and in addition to this I chose some distances/durations where marks already existed so that there were records to go for.
These records will be at World, British and Scottish level, including age groups, and range from 12 hours to 1000 miles in officially recognised races. The IAAF only recognises performances on road, track and indoor courses, so for this Project 60@60 I will not be including event records or treadmill records.
All races will have been officially endorsed by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and/or the National Athletic Federation of the host country.
My record setting exploits will be independently adjudicated by Alan Young – IAAF Grade B Course Measurer and contributor to the Association of Road Racing Statisticians.
September 2010
“Currently I have set 32 records, since I began ultra running in 1994. So I have to almost double that in 3 years! It will be an incredible challenge.”
July 2011
William has now set a total of 54 records (some awaiting confirmation & ratification) and after the 6-Day race in Hungary 2011, William became the oldest person ever to set an outright Scottish and British athletics record.
December 2011
William has now set 58 records.
November 2012
William achieved his 60th record during the Monaco “No Finish Line” race in November 2012.

Hi William, I loved reading about all your achievements and records breaking. Congratulations and I hope you will achieve you 60@60 with no problem, I think you can do it.
Well, for me, I’m a late comer into ultras. I have run almost all my life, but just the usual 5km, 10km, half marathons and a few full marathons. I run 100km Oxfam trailwalker Hong Kong in 25hrs in 1992, and again in 2009 in 22hrs.
It was trailwalker 2009 that sparked my passion for ultras. In march 2010 I did the racingtheplanet 250km in six days Atacama Desert crossing in Chile, then last june I did Desert Rats, 148mi in six days, between Grand Junction, Colorado and Moab, Utah in the USA. Now, I’m training to do racingtheplanet Nepal2011 in november.
I’m a long way away from winning any of this events, but I enjoy them inmensely.
Just reading about all your experiences, gives me more psicological strength to keep going, thanks.
Take care,
Marilena x
Thanks for your kind comments Marilena. I used to know a Hong Kong lady, Wynnie Cosgrove, who did well in the Trailwalker. You seem to be an experienced performer yourself now! Keep running and enjoying this great sport:)

This is awesome…I also just realized that you and I share the same birthday. I’m not quite as “experienced” as you are, being born October 1st, 1960. ~Tony C.
Awesome to see your commitment to breaking these records. Good on you.

Hi William, came across your blog and it’s fascinating reading – especially your 60/60 challenge. A question? When running a cold weather marathon, where there is ice and snow underfoot, do you use any ice grips, or traction products?
