A visit to Gomila’s bike shop at Binissalem makes a good 50 mile recovery ride, thanks to the level “waterpipe road”. They close for lunch at 1pm, and it’s worth phoning in case of closing days and festivals – Tel: 971 51 19 32. Possibly the best stocked bike shop in Majorca, Gomila’s jerseys make a useful memento to wear back home. If you plan to buy more kit, remember to take a bag!
Take main road, C712, south from Port d’Alcudia towards Can Picafort, but after a couple of miles at Las Gaviotas take right at traffic lights between shops/bars towards Sa Pobla. Follow the “Marshes Road” through reeds to Sa Pobla, (but remember to note the location of the junction in Sa Pobla for your ride back through the marshes later). In Sa Pobla turn left, then right, and look for signs to left for Llubi. Follow Llubi road for about 2.5 miles. Turn right at T junction onto road from Muro, and continue forward, ignoring left fork to Llubi. After nearly 4 miles, at T junction with Inca-Llubi road, turn right and immediately left onto unsigned rough surfaced track. You are now on the Waterpipe road, but don’t panic – it joins tarmac again after about 800 yds. Then enjoy views to hills on right. Continue over X-Rds with Inca-Sineu road, and with Inca-Sencelles road. After next minor X-Rds, take next turn right towards Binissalem (sign visible on right of road).[Note: to visit Tunel factory shop, continue ahead on Waterpipe road at this junction]. Follow lane to junction with old main road through Binissalem. Look for Gomila’s shop to left on opposite side of road, next to yellow signs of car tyre specialists. You can then make your way into the village centre which lies behind Gomila. Either find a bar by the square, or continue North over rail line at station, and right at junction towards Lloseta. Follow one-way system in Lloseta, and look for difficult junction left to Biniamar. Find your way to Selva, where make right turn through Moscari to Campanet.
Entering Campanet, fork left and then several left and rights towards the caves, avoiding the village centre. To complete your recovery, follow the signs to the caves, then take the steps up to the café. The views over the valley are magnificent, and it is a delightful sun-trap. The cats provide additional interest.
Finally return towards Sa Pobla, crossing the Palma road with care. Find your way through Sa Pobla following signs for Pollensa but locate the start of the “Marshes Road” used earlier, and back via Alcudia.
