UKA International Ultra Team Selection Early Season 2006
IAU 24 Hour World Challenge in Taipei 25 th /26 th February.
This event takes place early in the year whilst still within the 2005/6 financial year. This places considerable constraints upon the options for sending individuals or teams to the above event. The Ultra squad have had a limited budget this year and have budgeted carefully when sending a team to the World/European 24 hr in Worschach and individuals to the IAU European 100km Championship in Winschoten in September. Having reviewed the financial situation since the European 100km Championships earlier this month we have agreed that this has allowed us some limited funds for the key targets for early 2006. These are
1. to set up a successful squad weekend to build on our experiences and develop the squad further and then
2. to send individuals/team to Taipei . However, we can only afford the latter if medals are indeed a real prospect. In addition the Taipei competition does not include the European 24hr Challenge as in previous years, thus individuals or teams would anyway require a higher standard to be of real medal potential for the World Challenge alone.
This background has lead to the following selection criteria for the World 24 hr Challenge in February. A separate selection policy will be announced in March if an IAU European 24 hr challenge is announced for later in the year.
The selection criteria are based on analysis of the World rankings for 24 hr road for 2005 up to and including the World 24 Challenge in Worschach in 2005 with reference to the rankings for 2004 and the individual selection criteria is based on the world 10 th ranking. The team selection criteria is based on the top 20th ranking together with knowledge of the average scores of the teams securing the bronze position in the last three years. The team standard is a minimum standard as analysis of the last three years shows that for bronze position the average distance achieved by team members can be up to 243km for men and 215km for women (Individual rankings for 2004 and mid 2005 can be found on www.iau.org.tw – statistics section. and a resume of medal positions for the three years of the World 24 hour Challenge are attached in an annex to this paper.)
